Joburg Open and Australian PGA Championship tips with 169/1 double

Approximately 80 hours after Nicolai Hojgaard’s two-shot win at Dubai’s Earth Course brought the 2023 DP World Tour season to a close, the 2024 campaign begins with not one but two co-sanctioned tournaments – the Australian PGA Championship and the Joburg Open.

Racing & Football Outlook golf tipster Joe Champion has assessed each tournament and selected an each-way double which pays out at 169/1 with bet365, where new customers can claim up to £30 in free bets by signing up below.

Joburg Open winner prediction – Dan Bradbury at 16/1

The Joburg Open takes place at Houghton Golf Club where a strong South African contingent dominate the betting market with LIV Golf man Dean Burmester, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Branden Grace all to the fore.

South Africans have a strong record in DP World Tour events taking place on their home continent but three of the last four Joburg Opens have gone to foreign raiders and it would be no surprise if the most recent champion doubles up.

Defending a DPWT title is a new concept to Dan Bradbury but the Englishman, a surprise champion in 2022, returns to Houghton ranked a career-high 187th in the world having been outside the world’s top 1,400 ahead of his triumph last year.

It’s not all been smooth sailing for Bradbury since his win but he arrives to defend his title in the form of his life having finished sixth and 13th in two events in Spain, fifth in the Nedbank Challenge – also staged in South Africa – then 17th at the DPWT Championship.

This short Jack Nicklaus course demands accurate approaches to small greens, an area where 24-year-old tends to excel, and there’s every chance he puts those skills to good use again this week.

Australian PGA Championship winner prediction – Cameron Davis at 9/1

The stronger field of the week – at least in terms of star quality – comes at Royal Queensland Golf Club where Aussie Major champions Cameron Smith and Adam Scott are among those teeing it up in the Australian PGA.

Smith claimed this title for the third time last season and will take a lot of beating having finished runner-up in the Hong Kong Open the week before last but the 2022 Open winner looks short enough given the amount of quality rivals he has to beat.

Lee shrugged off the trip from Dubai to finish fourth last season and should again go well but it’s Cameron Davis who looks the best bet following a sustained run of excellent efforts in PGA Tour company.

The 28-year-old Sydney man, who won the Australian Open in 2018, has form figures of 10-7-6-40-3-7-12 from his last seven PGA Tour appearances, superior form than when finishing seventh in this tournament last season.
