John Deere Classic prediction & 650/1 each-way golf double tip

The PGA Tour heads to Illinois thus week for the John Deere Classic and the DP World Tour is in Germany for the BMW International Open.

Racing Post expert James Mason has picked his winner for each event and together they form a huge 650/1 double, which should be backed as an each-way bet.

Sharp irons and hot putters have been the order of the day for the last two PGA Tour events and that remit for success won’t be changing for this week’s tournament, the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run.

Austrian Sepp Straka carded a sublime 62 for his final 18 holes last year to claim the spoils in Illinois – the lowest closing round in the Quad Cities in 41 years – while -20 or better has been the winning score in 12 of the 23 editions at this course.

Hitting greens and holing putts will be key factors here, and it is a similar story over on the DP World Tour for the 35th edition of the BMW International Open, which is staged at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried.

While the winning score won’t be as low in Germany as it will be in Illinois, approach play and putting should prove to be crucial departments and South African Thriston Lawrence is the defending champion here after his one-stroke triumph in 2023.

After two missed cuts in his first three cracks at TPC Deere Run, Denny McCarthy has got to grips with this course over the last two editions – recording back-to-back sixth-placed finishes – and he looks set for another bold challenge.

The 31-year-old American came close to breaking his PGA Tour duck at the Texas Open in April – losing out to Akshay Bhatia in a playoff – and he put in another solid showing when T6 at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Ranking second in strokes gained: putting and fifth in putting average, McCarthy is one of the best exponents of the flat stick and that should give him a significant advantage this week. Arriving fresh after skipping last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, this may finally end up being his moment.

BMW International Open venue Golfclub Munchen Eichenried is a difficult tree-lined course that has 10 water hazards coming into play and greens that have become faster since they were changed to pure Creeping Bentgrass ahead of the 2019 edition.

Accuracy off the tee is more important than distance here, but precise irons and a solid putter are the two main factors to consider and it is hard to look past defending champion Thriston Lawrence, who was T2 at the European Open in Germany on his last DP World Tour outing.

The South African is unrivalled in strokes gained: putting and second in putts per GIR on the European circuit this season, while he is also fourth in SG: total and in the top 20 for par-three, par-four and par-five scoring.

Lawrence’s iron play has also looked sharp in recent weeks and, if everything comes together again, he could become the first player to successfully retain the title.
