League One winner prediction – Bolton each-way at 10/1

Birmingham City arrive in League One in 2024-25 with a big reputation and small title price, but fans of Sunderland, Ipswich and Derby will tell prospective Blues’ backers that reputations count for nothing in the third tier.

Premier League old boys Sunderland, Ipswich and Derby have all fallen out of the Championship in the last decade and none won promotion back immediately.

Fellow top-flight veterans like Bolton, Blackpool and Charlton are still there along with several more, all happy to warn Chris Davies and his Birmingham side that getting back up is a real battle.

Indeed, with progressive sorts like Wrexham and Stockport also joining a section that includes the likes of Reading, Barnsley and Peterborough, plus Huddersfield and Rotherham who also came down with Birmingham, League One looks heavy on talent and short on certainties.

Birmingham have made a number of great additions – keeper Ryan Allsopp, striker Alfie May, Norwegian winger Emil Hansson – to an already strong squad but there is still a sense that over a 46-game campaign in which St Andrews will take on the mantle of Wembley to some of the division’s lesser lights, they are short enough.

And if rookie boss Davies doesn’t get some fight out of his team they will quickly get to appreciate the magnitude of the task that faces them.

Bolton are second favourites in the market and could be one of the teams to take the battle to the market leaders. The Trotters were excellent last season, touched off only by class acts Portsmouth and Derby having been hailed by many as the best team in the division. That they flopped in the play-off final against Oxford was a major surprise.

Only Posh scored more goals than Bolton last season, only Portsmouth lost fewer games and with money to spend, Wanderers have to presume they will be contenders again.

League One top six prediction – Rotherham at 10/11

Rotherham, the ultimate yo-yo team, actually make more appeal in the top-six market.

Since 2017 they have been relegated from the Championship four times and on each of the previous three they have gone straight back up.

Steve Evans, who has won promotion before with the Millers, has returned and is making a number of big signings, which suggests Rotherham are bound to contend.
