League Two winner prediction – Doncaster at 9/1
Chesterfield finished 2023-24 top of the National League and look set to start 2024-25 top of the League Two title market with back-to-back promotions forecast for the Spireites.
Relative big spenders for this level and coming off a magnificent campaign it’s easy to see why layers fancy they can do what Wrexham did in May and clinch back-to-back promotions.
But Wrexham didn’t manage to land the title while their big National League promotion rivals Notts County couldn’t even make it into the top half, so Paul Cook’s Chesterfield won’t necessarily find it a walk in the park.
League Two is a bruising school where fourth-tier powers of the calibre of Bradford, Doncaster and MK Dons will surely be in any title conversation alongside Chesterfield. And you only have to look at last term’s play-off final between unfancied Crawley and Crewe to appreciate there is latent and unlikely talent around every corner with ambitions for a top-seven spot.
Of the big boys, Doncaster finished the last campaign like a train, stringing together ten straight wins from early March to gatecrash the play-offs, the surprise being they fluffed their lines against Crewe once they had got there.
Two defeats since the end of January suggest Grant McCann’s men will return in good form and they have to be delighted to be giving 38-year-old striker Billy Sharp one last hurrah.
League Two promotion prediction – Barrow at 6/1
Barrow are a team that ought to be in that discussion as well and they look well worth considering at 6-1 for promotion.
Pete Wild, the manager who had them in the play-off places before a surprising end-of-season collapse, paid the price for missing out with his job.
But ninth and eighth-place finishes in their last two seasons show both consistency and the right trajectory and Stephen Clemence has to feel blessed to have pretty much walked out from the sack at Gillingham into what looks like a plum job at Holker Street.
A long-term coaching companion of Steve Bruce, Clemence has vowed to make the Bluebirds easier on the eye and will be pleased to have signed Huddersfield winger Connor Mahoney, Salford centre-back Theo Vassell and, perhaps most interestingly, exciting Everton youngster Katia Kouyate.
If he can revive the scoring fortunes of former Newport hotshot Dominic Telford – earmarked for a No.10 role and enjoying that role – Barrow can find their way into the play-off places as an absolute minimum.
