Month in Sport: 892/1 Acca for June's top sporting events!
Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.
There’s a World Cup-shaped hole in all our lives right now, but that doesn’t mean sports fans are left wanting this June. Across the globe there are massive events on this summer, including a busy spell of Nations League fixtures.
There’s also more action from F1, horse racing and basketball to come this month so we’ve picked out the biggest sporting events in June with a betting tip on each to boot. Together they combine to make up our 892/1 Month in Sport Accumulator for June which you can back below.
Month in Sport Accumulator
Germany vs England – Tuesday, 7th June
These two old rivals clash in the Nations League on Tuesday, with the Three Lions looking to build on their run to the final of the Euros. Germany have underperformed on the international stage of late, but they are hoping to claw their way back into contention in time for the Qatar World Cup this winter.
There’s arguably no bigger game across this international window than the clash between these two rivals. After losing to England last summer, Germany have a point to prove in this one. While the Germans have a poor record in the Nations League, they’ve never lost at home in this competition. England lost away to Belgium and drew at Denmark in the previous edition, so back the Germans to claim a victory.
Tip: Germany to win
Azerbaijan Grand Prix – Sunday, 12th June
Sergio Perez earned a rare win in Monaco last time out thanks to a catalogue of strategy errors only Ferrari could dream up and the Mexican driver actually won in Baku last year, but I am opting for his teammate Max Verstappen to return to form.
The defending champion never quite found his rhythm in Monaco but that is a very rare occurrence and he will be itching to return to form, especially after his dramatic tyre failure in Baku last year saw him retire from the lead.
The track is well-suited to the power-focused Red Bulls, too. Baku may be a street circuit but it is a far cry from the old-fashioned street circuits such as Monaco and the 2-kilometre stretch of full-throttle racing on the main straight should provide plenty of opportunities for the faster Red Bull to make a pass on the Ferraris if necessary.
Red Bull have won two of the last four Azerbaijan Grand Prix and Verstappen has won four of the five races he has completed this season, with Monaco being the exception. With their reliability issues seemingly on the mend and the Dutchman taking the chequered flag first in three of the last four races, I’m backing him to be on top of the podium in Baku.
Tip: Verstappen to win
Royal Ascot Gold Cup – Thursday, 16th June
The Gold Cup, one of Royal Ascot’s showpiece races, takes place on Thursday and top-class stayer Trueshan heads the betting. Three-time winner Stradivarius is also in the field, and although both of those runners look to hold strong chances, that’s reflected in the prices.
Scope won the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp last time out and the Ralph Beckett-trained stayer was doing all his best work in the final couple of furlings in France. That leaves the impression that there could be more to come moving up to the two mile and four furlong trip at Ascot and the four-year-old is still unexposed.
It’s likely that Scope will need to better that Longchamp victory to win a Gold Cup, but he has had only eight career starts and there could well be more to come.
Tip: Scope to win
US Open – 16th June to 19th June
The third major of 2022 takes place in the middle of this month, with the world’s top players bound for the Country Club in Massachusetts.
Xander Schauffele is a contender to watch in Brookline, given that he has form figures of 5-6-3-5-7 in the US Open. He was T13 at the PGA Championship last month and he can take another step forward at a tournament he clearly enjoys. Having had a solid 2022 campaign so far, back Schauffele to top it off with a major victory.
Tip: Xander Schauffele to win
