Some of the best players in women’s football are set to descend on Paris for this summer’s Olympics and there are a number of nations in contention for gold.

Unlike the men’s equivalent competition, there is no age limit in the women’s football at the Paris Olympics and each of the 12 teams involved have rosters of 18 players.

Ahead of the opening round of matches next week, we’ve called upon Liam Flin to pick out the side to back for gold. Our outright winner selection has been priced up with bet365 and new customers can take advantage of this great welcome offer before backing our tip.

Olympics Women’s Football 2024 Predictions And Tips

France Women to win

At the top of the market are four-time gold medallists the USA but there are reasons to oppose the Stars and Stripes.

The USA have not won a gold medal in women’s football since London 2012 and they were underwhelming in last year’s Women’s World Cup, crashing out in the last 16.

The introduction of former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes as head coach was a smart move but they are still in a period of transition and there are better options further down the betting.

Canada claimed gold in this event at Tokyo 2020 but have since bid farewell to prolific goalscorer Christine Sinclair, who has retired from international football, and they could struggle on European soil.

Spain are the obvious bet and it is hard to make a strong case against them.

La Roja were crowned World Cup winners just last year and their squad is loaded with some of the biggest names in club football from Alexia Putellas to Aitana Bonmati to Irene Paredes.

They have since been pretty faultless, although their loss to Czech Republic will have raised eyebrows, and for value reasons, France are the best bet.

Home advantage is key in any Olympic event and it should give Les Bleues the slight edge over their rivals.

They were semi-finalists at Women’s Euro 2021 and quarter-finalists at last year’s World Cup, having been denied another spot in the last four by Australia on penalties.

A lot is made of the link between Spain and all-conquering Barcelona in women’s football but Lyon were runners-up in the Women’s Champions League this year and the nucleus of their squad represents France.

Among those players are exciting forwards Eugenie Le Sommer, Delphine Cascarino and Kadidiatou Diani as well as veteran defender Wendie Renard.

There is no easy group in this event but France arguably have the softer opponents with Germany, top-heavy Zambia and Australia joining USA in Group B and Spain accompanied by Japan, Brazil and Nigeria in Group C.
