PGA Championship Preview, Predictions and Tips
Golf’s grandest events come thick and fast at this time of year and there are few bigger than the US PGA Championship, the second men’s Major of 2023, which will begin on Thursday at Oak Hill Country Club, New York.
Oak Hill is a familiar venue, last staging the US PGA in 2013, when Jason Dufner defeated Jim Furyk by two shots, while it was also the scene of three previous US Opens as well as the 1995 Ryder Cup won by Europe.
While Dufner and Furyk were short hitters, the revamped East Course now measures in at 7,394 yards, making it much more akin to the majority of modern US PGA set-ups in that it puts a premium on long-game ability.
In-form Finau poised to claim first Major
The US PGA has thrown up several first-time Major champions in recent years and while Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy all deserve respect, it could pay to look further down the list, starting with a man who is clearly capable of winning the biggest titles golf has to offer – Tony Finau.
Finau was slightly disappointing when fancied for the Masters, finishing 26th after a solid start, but the big Utah man has since returned to winning ways at the Mexico Open then struck the ball superbly well at the Wells Fargo, where the putter let him down.
He’s traditionally a much better putter on bentgrass greens and his long game has been purring all year, with his irons looking particularly sharp as he ranks first in strokes-gained approach on the PGA Tour this season.
Finau has form in the northern states too, winning in Minnesota, Michigan and New Jersey, with his Michigan victory of particular interest as it was achieved at another Donald Ross design – Detroit Golf Club, which stages the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
He has always looked capable of winning Major championships, chalking up ten top-ten finishes across the four Majors including three in the US PGA, and this could be the week when he finally puts it all together.
Schauffele looks another likely Oak Hill champion
Xander Schauffele has been in superb form from March onwards, reaching the quarter-finals of the WGC Match Play, finishing tenth at the Masters, fourth at the Heritage, fourth in the Zurich Classic pairs event alongside Patrick Cantlay and coming closest of all when a Wells Fargo runner-up last time.
He remains a consistent Majors performer and many of his PGA Tour wins have come on old, classical golf courses like TPC River Highlands and Donald Ross’s East Lake, where Schauffele has been a regular contender for the season-ending Tour Championship.
His approach play has been precise throughout 2023 and he drove the ball better than he has all season at the Wells Fargo last time out.
Wyndham Clark got the better of Schauffele on that occasion but that still has to be viewed as a positive result heading to a course which should suit.
Conners’ ball-striking makes him a contender
With 12 each-way places on offer with some bookmakers, Corey Conners is another who looks worth a small bet given the quality of his ball-striking in general and particularly last time out at Quail Hollow.
Conners finished eighth in the Wells Fargo and it’s only a little over a month since he won a first title in four years when doubling up in the Texas Open. He’s an excellent driver who could well thrive at the East Course.
