We are just a week away from the return of the Premier League and our attentions turn to the top flight in our season of outright predictions.

First up, we focus on the top of the table with our winner predictions, with the winners of the last four titles being opposed.

Premier League winner prediction – Arsenal at 15/8

Arsenal finished five points adrift of Manchester City in the 2022/23 season but closed that gap to just two points last season, matching the Cityzens’ winning tally of 89 points the season before but falling just short of winning the top-flight title for the first time in two decades.

The margins were even finer when it came to expected goals, with the Gunners trailing by just 1.11 expected points and harbouring the best defensive record in the division.

Mikel Arteta’s side have made one big upgrade in Riccardo Calafiori at full-back, but their main advantage lies in the youth of their squad.

Only one Arsenal player – 29-year-0ld Leandro Trossard – with more than 1,000 Premier League minutes under his belt last season is over the age of 27, a few of Manchester City’s stars – Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne, John Stones, and Mateo Kovacic – are already the wrong side of 30.

Pep Guardiola is yet to make any major moves in the transfer market, and relying on the likes of De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, who scored 28% of their league goals last season, is a risk given the Belgian’s injury record over the past few seasons.

Arteta has a young and continuously improving side to work with, and that could be the deciding factor when it comes to the title this season.

Premier League forecast – 1st: Arsenal, 2nd: Man City at 4/1

Arsenal may have the edge, but I cannot see anyone challenging Manchester City for the silver medal this season and they are worth backing in a straight forecast.

Liverpool were the only side that came close last term, but they will be in transition following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, and there is still a lingering doubt over Mohamed Salah’s future.

Chelsea have a largely unproven manager in Enzo Maresca, a hugely bloated squad, and were 29 points off the pace last season.

Manchester United have attracted some betting interest after two promising signings in Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, but they were awful at times last season and are starting the season with Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund out injured.

Elsewhere, Newcastle struggled to cope with the demands of European football last season and are contending with doubts over the future of Eddie Howe, while Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs were impressive but will now have to juggle continental demands.
