Premier League top scorer betting odds: Paul Robinson tips Vardy for glory

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

It’s a pretty congested Premier League table at the minute, while the same can be said of the scoring charts. Seven players are within three goals of top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the tenth round of games.

The Everton man was an 80/1 shot to win the golden boot in early September, but his red hot start has pushed him into the mix. However, can the England hopeful last the distance over the course of the season? Former Three Lions stopper Paul Robinson isn’t convinced.

Robinson: Calvert-Lewin can gate-crash Euro 2020 party

While appearing on the Racing Post’s weekly YouTube football show Different League in association with Betfred, Robinson did praise Calvert-Lewin’s impressive start.

“Calvert-Lewin has surprised me,” Robinson told presenter Scott Minto. “He has developed into an all-round top striker and he’s put himself right up there in the international frame as well.

“In 18 months he has become one of the league’s best strikers, leading scorers, evolved physically and under Ancelotti he seems to have flourished.

“You look at the likes of Kane, Rashford, Sterling, Sancho and then for me it’s between Tammy Abraham and Calvert-Lewin for that final place in the Euro squad. That’s where he has put himself.”

Calvert-Lewin has already made an international impact this term. The bookies agree with Robinson’s claim that the Everton forward will be in Gareth Southgate’s squad in the summer.

Robinson’s Premier League top scorer prediction

While Calvert-Lewin could find himself heading off to glamourous Burton with the England side this summer, he isn’t Robinson’s pick for the golden boot.

Asked who he thinks will be the Premier League’s top scorer, Robinson answered: “I like Jamie Vardy.

“He took himself out of the England fold, gave himself time to concentrate on his club form and he just keeps doing it week in, week out, and he’s playing in a Leicester team under Brendan Rodgers which still evolves.

“Okay they had a slip-up against Liverpool but they are there or thereabouts and Jamie Vardy will always score goals.”

Premier League top scorer betting tips

Like Paul Robinson, we think Jamie Vardy is the worthy frontrunner in the golden boot chase. The Leicester forward is two goals behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but he’s the league leader in terms of Expected Goals. Vardy has 8.04 xG this term, matching his tally of eight goals for the campaign.

Vardy is the only player to have five goals or more in the Premier League this term and not be overperforming in xG terms. That points to his consistency paving the way to more individual success for the former England striker.

Vardy’s record against those at the top and bottom of the league show that there’s no one the Foxes forward has to fear. Playing as the focal point of an attack-minded Leicester side we are backing Vardy to top the scoring charts.
