Last season was a great one for Italian football, with Atalanta lifting the Europa League and Bologna earning the league’s fifth Champions League spot. Almost half of the division will feature in Europe this term, but how are things looking domestically?

Our outright predictions continue with a look at the 2024/25 Serie A campaign, with three tips for the coming season.

Serie A without Inter – Juventus to win at 7/4

Inter Milan romped home to their 20th Serie A title last season but they could face more competition in the Scudetto race this term with a number of big guns under new management.

Seven of last season’s top ten have new head coaches in place for the 2024-25 campaign and there is reason to be optimistic about many of them.

Although they were still 19 points adrift, AC Milan were Inter’s closest competitors for the title last term and they could narrow the gap under new boss Paulo Fonseca, who previously managed Roma in Serie A.

But Alvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlovic are not exactly blockbuster signings at each end and punters should instead look at Juventus in the Without Inter betting.

Juve placed third last term but it is out with the old and in with the new with Thiago Motta their new manager following Max Allegri’s departure in May.

Motta steered Bologna to an unthinkable top-four finish last season and is the kind of progressive manager the club need.

They have recruited smartly with Douglas Luiz and Kephren Thuram likely to make up the base of a rock-solid midfield, while they have some great attacking options in Dusan Vlahovic, Arkadiusz Milik and Turkish starlet Kenan Yildiz.

Serie A top four finish – Atalanta at 13/8

While they are the bet to win without Inter, Atalanta look overpriced to make the top four.

While other clubs have switched things up, Gian Piero Gasperini remains in charge in Bergamo and that is not a bad thing.

Nicolo Zaniolo previously lit up Serie A at Roma and arrives on loan from Galatasaray, while Charles De Ketelaere is a fine attacking signing.

But more importantly, the core of this Atalanta team showed their class by winning the Europa League and finishing as runners-up in the Coppa Italia last season.

They were the only team to defeat Bayer Leverkusen, beating them 3-0 in the Europa League final, and they matched that scoreline when beating Liverpool at Anfield in the competition’s quarter-finals.

They also finished fourth last season in Serie A and can repeat the feat.

Verona to finish bottom at 5/1

Verona’s survival was a surprise last season, with 12 players departing in January leaving them looking vulnerable. They ended 2023 on 14 points, level with 18th-placed Cagliari and just two points clear of a Salernitana side that finished bottom by some distance.

Marco Baroni was credited with keeping them up against the odds, which earned him a move to Lazio this summer. Paolo Zanetti was picked to replace him and his managerial record isn’t that special.

Zanetti started his career with Serie C side Sudtirol, with his main success coming outside the top-flight. He made Sudtirol promotion contenders, earning a move to Ascoli where he lasted half a season, losing 11 of his first 24 games. He landed on his feet at Venezia and while he took them up, he was sacked in his debut Serie A campaign after his side fell bottom following eight consecutive defeats.

His last job saw him sacked early in his second season at Empoli, where four straight losses brought the end of his tenure. Verona will struggle to find a manager that can inspire the turnaround Baroni managed and I don’t think their good finish reflects the quality in the squad. While they’re a good price for relegation, things could quickly fall apart and the standard of the promoted sides is high.

Take Verona to prop up the table at 5/1.
