The Premier League season kicks off on Friday night but already there is drama off the pitch as top-flight bosses complain about the new rules regarding added time.

World Cup-style stoppage time will be implemented in an attempt to combat time wasting, and we have already seen the effect of the new rules with the beginning of the EFL campaign last weekend.

The opening game of the new EFL season saw 15 minutes of stoppage time added in total and the first half alone produced five cards from referee Robert Madley.

There was an increase of around six minutes of stoppage time per game compared to last season and the ball was in play for eight minutes more.

An increase in goals followed, with 15 of the 97 EFL goals last weekend coming in added time, while one came in the Community Shield as Arsenal scored a dramatic 101st-minute equaliser against Manchester City.

All being told, a massive 54% of goals scored in the Championship last weekend came in the final 15 minutes of either half, compared with a modest 37% tally last season.

Late bloomers could flourish

Targeting teams that finish either, or both, halves strong could be a tactic to look for this weekend.

Liverpool scored the highest total goals in these periods last season, notching 31 times in the final 15 minutes of either half, with this accounting for some 41% of their total goals.

Jurgen Klopp were not the highest in terms of percentages though. That record belongs to Brentford, who scored a phenomenal 52% of their goals, or 30 of 58, in the closing stages of either half.

Manchester United (45%), Nottingham Forest (45%) and Newcastle (44%) all performed admirably in this regard, too, and you can back a four-fold late goal acca involving these four teams below!
