The Open 2023 category winners treble
The Open top Japanese prediction – Hideki Matsuyama at 6/4
Several specials catch the eye at Hoylake this week including in the top Japanese player market where Hideki Matsuyama should make his class count to land the odds in a nine-runner heat.
Former Masters champion Matsuyama has flown the flag for Japanese golf over the last decade, including at Hoylake in 2014 where he carved out a respectable top-40 finish on only his second Open appearance.
That course experience is a significant advantage with Hiroshi Iwata the only other Japanese player to tee it up in both the 2014 Open and this week, and there’s no doubt that Matsuyama is a superior player nine years later.
The 31-year-old always comes with fitness risks attached but he’s produced a series of solid PGA Tour performances from the Players Championship onwards, finishing 32nd or better in nine of his last ten events despite making the clear decision to rein himself in with driver in hand in a bid to protect his ailing body.
Prioritising accuracy paid off for Tiger Woods in the 2006 Open and Matsuyama could plod his way up the Hoylake leaderboard by applying similar tactics.
The Open top Swede prediction – Henrik Stenson at 14/5
Henrik Stenson’s decision to join LIV Golf following the 2022 Open caused him to be stripped of the Ryder Cup captaincy but the Swede will be hoping to hit the headlines for his on-course performance this time around.
Stenson, who won the Open after a memorable tussle with Phil Mickelson at Troon in 2016, is the outsider with some firms in a four-man top Swede market also featuring Alex Bjork, Alex Noren and David Lingmerth.
It’s possible to make a case for any of the four but Stenson has by far the best Majors record. He might not be the force he once was but he has Royal Liverpool experience under his belt and has finished fourth and six in two of the last three LIV Golf events.
The Open top South African prediction – Branden Grace at 7/2
The top South African market is a typically competitive affair and Branden Grace, who shot a 62 in the final round at Royal Birkdale in 2017, has the game to upstage former winner Louis Oosthuizen.
Grace came through qualifying to earn a shot at Open glory and he has been playing well on the LIV Tour, ranking sixth in the individual season-long standings, which suggests he could make his mark at Hoylake.
The Open to miss the cut prediction – Jason Day at 6/4
Jason Day enjoyed a series of resurgent performances earlier in the season but the Aussie has struggled since winning the Byron Nelson in May, missing three of his last four cuts.
His approach play has been poor and he could fail to make the weekend if the long game fails to sparkle once again.
