Tour de France 2023: Pogacar and Vingegaard the main contenders

Vingegaard can claim Tour de France glory
After winning in 2020, UAE Team Emirates’ Pogacar claimed the crown ahead of Team Jumbo Visma’s Vingegaard in 2021 before being dethroned by the Dane in 2022.
The pair have met just once this season, with the former dominating Paris-Nice and while the wins kept coming, his momentum was stalled by a broken wrist suffered when crashing at April’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
Pogacar says the injury came at the “perfect time” for him to get back for the Tour but will surely have felt a pang of anxiety in watching Vingegaard win the Criterium du Dauphine.
While the Slovenian’s process seems to be to race as much as he can, his Danish rival prefers to measure his progress in training and his method clearly works, winning two of his three stage races in 2023, having also taken the Tour of the Basque Country.
Pogacar drew first blood at Paris-Nice but his time off the bike may prove costly.
Vingegaard can also count on a superb support cast, including Wout van Aert, Sepp Kuss, Christophe Laporte and Tiesj Benoot, and looks to have the edge in a likely two-horse race.
