This week marks the beginning of the fourth instalment of the UEFA Nations League as the 16 teams in League A compete for a spot in the Nations League Finals next summer.

Starting in this iteration, the group winners and runners-up will qualify for a new two-legged quarter-final round scheduled for March 2025, with the group winners facing off against a runner-up from a different group.

UEFA Nations League 2024/25 outright winner prediction – Spain at 6/1

Spain beat Croatia on penalties in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League final and the defending champions look the best value to retain their crown next year.

La Roja were deserved winners of Euro 2024 in July and played by far the best football of the tournament, while they begin this year-long campaign with a young and improving side.

In golden boy Lamine Yamal and the slightly older Nico Williams they have two of the best up-and-coming attacking talents in the world, and a midfield setup that includes Rodri and Pedri is hard to top.

On paper at least, Luis de la Fuente’s side are not quite as strong at the back, but they only conceded four goals in seven games in Euro 2024 and should have no real issues keeping their Group 4 opponents at bay.

They are 1/6 favourites to top their group and, as they showed in Germany this summer, they have the quality to see off pretty much any team in world football.

Their likely competitors for the title – Portugal, France, and Germany – all face tougher groups than Spain and that could be a stumbling block.

France, who are 3/1 favourites for the trophy, have to contend with Belgium and Italy in Group 2, while Portugal have Croatia competing for top spot and the Netherlands are in Germany’s group.

By contrast, Spain’s biggest challenge will be Denmark, with Switzerland and Serbia likely to bring up the rear of Group 4.
