Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Arsenal hold what should be an unassailable 7-1 lead and that gives Mikel Arteta a chance to rotate, but even if he doesn’t take that opportunity PSV can at least get on the scoresheet. The Dutch side will be keen to restore a bit of pride and they have only failed to score in one Champions League game, striking against the likes of Sporting, Juventus (in all three meetings), PSG, Liverpool and in the first leg. Both teams have also scored in each of PSV’s last eight games.

Arsenal 3-1

Reason for tip

With home advantage, Arsenal should be able to finish this tie off with a win even if Arteta does decide to rotate but they won’t want to expend too much energy on Wednesday in a tie that has already been essentially won. PSV have conceded exactly three goals in three of their last five away games across all competitions, so take a chance on a 3-1 win for the home side.

Raheem Sterling To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Raheem Sterling may be given a rare start for the hosts on Wednesday and this could be an opportunity for the forward to grab a second Arsenal goal. Sterling has scored once in the EFL Cup and is getting chances, averaging 1.4 shots per 90 minutes across all competitions.

Arsenal vs PSV Predictions

  • Arsenal won the first leg 7-1.
  • Both teams have scored in PSV’s last eight games.
  • Arsenal have conceded in six of their last seven at home.

Last eight locked in for Arsenal

Arsenal take on PSV in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday with a place in the quarter-finals virtually guaranteed.

The Gunners won 7-1 in the first leg in Eindhoven, recording the largest ever away win in the knockout stages of the Champions League, and it would take an unprecedented turnaround for their European campaign to end this week.

However, that does make this fixture a little harder to navigate. PSV will be keen to restore some pride even if they know they have almost no chance of progress, while Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta may even use this chance to rest a few players – although he will still name a strong side.

As such, I’m reluctant to get behind Arsenal as clear favourites against a team that have picked up results against PSG, Liverpool and Juventus this season, so the best option for our main bet looks to be the evens on goals at both ends.

Both teams can strike at the Emirates

PSV did manage to get on the scoresheet in the first leg and they can at least land a glancing blow on Arsenal in North London.

The Dutch outfit have seen goals at both ends in each of their last eight games and have only failed to score in one Champions League game, grabbing goals against the likes of Sporting, Juventus (in all three meetings), PSG, Liverpool and Shakhtar along the way.

Arsenal have found clean sheets hard to come by of late, particularly at home where they have conceded in six of their last seven games, but they have only failed to score in three home games at the Emirates all season and should be able to grab a few goals against a team they hit seven against last week.

Go for a modest Arsenal win

With home advantage, Arsenal should be able to finish this tie off with a win even if Arteta does decide to rotate a little ahead of the game against Chelsea at the weekend.

A 3-1 win for the Gunners is the pick as they won’t want to expend too much energy on Wednesday in a tie that has already been essentially won, while PSV have conceded exactly three goals in three of their last five away games across all competitions.

Raheem Sterling may be given a rare start for the hosts on Wednesday and this could be an opportunity for the forward to grab a second Arsenal goal. Sterling has scored once in the EFL Cup and is getting chances, averaging 1.4 shots per 90 minutes across all competitions, and he may be able to take on against PSV.
