Crucial run for Reds

Liverpool face a crucial seven days in their bid to win just their second Premier League title as they take on Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle within a week, starting with tomorrow’s trip to Villa Park.

The Reds have not been at their most convincing recently, they rested plenty of their stars for their FA Cup clash with Plymouth before being beaten 1-0 by the Championship strugglers and they followed that with a 2-2 league draw against rivals Everton.

Arne Slot’s side then hosted Wolves on Sunday and were left clinging on as they withheld heavy pressure from the Old Gold to secure a 2-1 win.

Liverpool failed to have a shot in the second half, the first time that has ever happened in a Premier League game at Anfield.

They have opened the gap back up to seven points over Arsenal at the top of the table but this challenging three-game run will go a long way to deciding the destination of the Premier League title.

Villa solid at home

The Reds first visit an Aston Villa team who have been rock solid at home this season, losing just two of their 20 matches at Villa Park in all competitions, and beating Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Bologna in Birmingham.

Despite that, Unai Emery’s side were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw when they hosted Ipswich at the weekend. That result was especially tough to take given the fact that the Tractor Boys were down to ten men from the 40th minute onwards.

The Villans’ Champions League exploits have distracted somewhat from their league performance but they are still just six points behind a top-four spot so cannot be discounted in the race for Europe.

The signings of Donyell Malen, Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio have given them a real strength in depth in attacking areas too.

Salah the key

Given Aston Villa’s home form and the Reds finding life tough at the moment, it is difficult to side with the visitors at odds-on.

Nevertheless the Villans’ record against teams in the race for a Champions League spot leaves a bit to be desired so they are also hard to trust.

The safest way to play may be goals. Both teams have scored in a game that has also gone over 2.5 goals in five of Liverpool’s last seven outings and with the Reds feeling the brunt of a tough schedule, this could be an end-to-end affair.

The Reds have played out four 2-2 draws in the league this season and it may pay to side with them to extend that run in the correct score market. Mo Salah also has 23 goals in the Premier League, more than anyone else, and he is a solid bet to get on the scoresheet once more.
