Friday night clash for Villa and Saints
Aston Villa stopped the rot last time out with an impressive point against defending champions Manchester City and they will be looking to back that up with a result against visitors Southampton on Friday evening.
Saints went down at Wolves in their last fixture but they were perhaps unlucky not to get anything out of the game, and in general results have been fairly impressive for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men as they have seven points from six games and two wins in their last four league games.
Goals at both ends look likely
There have been goals at both ends in five of Villa’s last six games and they have only failed to score in one of their last seven league games at Villa Park in a run stretching back to last season.
Both teams have scored in four of Saints’ six league games and they are generally good for a goal on their travels, only failing to score in three of their last 13 competitive trips, so both teams to score stands out as a strong option for our main bet.
Spoils could be shared in Birmingham
Villa may have claimed a point against City last time out but that ended a run of three straight league defeats and they may struggle to back that up with a win against an improving Southampton outfit.
The hosts have scored just five goals in their six games and Saints have hit seven, so this is unlikely to be a high-scoring affair even if I am expecting both teams to score and a 1-1 draw has some appeal in the correct score market.
Both of these teams tend to share their goals out, or at least that is what has happened in these early stages. Che Adams in Southampton’s top scorer with two and no Villa player has scored more than once in the league. As such, it is a tough task picking out a scorer but James Ward-Prowse does look a reasonable option as he has scored once and did manage two attempts against Wolves last time out.
