Title defence all but over for Bayer

Bayer Leverkusen can still mathematically retain the Bundesliga title but with an eight-point gap between themselves and leaders Bayer Munich and just 12 left to play for, their chances now look essentially theoretical.

Their hopes could be extinguished altogether if they fail to beat Augsburg this weekend and there are a few reasons why the visitors may get a result.

For their part, Augsburg won’t necessarily want to be the team who help their Bavarian rivals claim the title but they are in excellent form and Bayer have found it hard to get wins over the line of late.

Bayer come into the game after back-to-back draws with bottom half sides Union Berlin (h) and St Pauli (a) and they are facing an Augsburg side who have lost just one of their last 14 Bundesliga games – against Bayern.

Augsburg managed to hold Champions league bound Frankfurt to a draw last weekend and they still have a chance to sneak into the European spots themselves, as they are only four points behind Mainz in sixth spot.

Backing the visitors in the double chance market at 2/1 looks a decent value play here, and a 1-1 draw has a chance in the correct score market.

Bayer have drawn their last two games and have only scored three goals in total across their last four fixtures, while Augsburg have scored just 33 goals in 30 Bundesliga games (shipping 40 themselves) so a low-scoring score draw could be on the cards.
