Brescia vs SPAL Predictions
- SPAL have lost every meeting with a promoted side so far this season
- SPAL have lost 13 times in 17 away trips
- The visitors have lost six of seven games since the restart, including four striaght losses to nil
- Brescia have been better than the away side since the restart, picking up four points in three home games
Brescia favourites for basement battle
Serie A’s bottom two face off on Sunday, with both sides unlikely to have a Serie A future. The pair are well off the pace in the survival battle, with Brescia eight points off 17th and SPAL 11 shy of safety. It’s safe to say that it’s been a disappointing return for the duo.
Things could get even worse for the visitors, who could suffer another blow here. Brescia won 1-0 in the reverse fixture courtesy of a goal from Mario Balotelli; SPAL could become the first opponents that Brescia beat home and away in the same Serie A season since Reggina in 2004/05. However, even three points likely won’t save the hosts.
Before Brescia and SPAL, each of the previous 19 teams that had lost at least 22 of their first 33 matches in Serie A went on to be relegated to Serie B. These two are likely to continue that streak, with Brescia losing 22 and SPAL losing 24 after their midweek humbling against Inter Milan.
SPAL on the brink
Their latest defeat has left SPAL potentially a game away from relegation. With the sides in 17th and 18th facing off this weekend as well, SPAL will find themselves at least 12 points off with four games left to play. Given their negative head to head record against both Genoa and Lecce, a defeat here will relegate SPAL.
A loss looks likely for the visitors, who have fallen from their previous strong battles against the drop in recent seasons. Since their return to Serie A, SPAL had lost only once in their first 10 meetings against newly-promoted teams (W7 D2), while they’ve lost each of the four meetings against teams promoted from Serie B so far in this campaign.
Our predictions are backing another loss for the away side, given how poor SPAL have been on the road – they’re one of Europe’s worst travellers. Only Norwich (0.4) and Dijon (0.5) have scored fewer goals per game than SPAL (0.6) away from home this season in their respective leagues (top five European leagues only).
Brescia to end visitors’ top-flight stay
SPAL’s low scoring away record has seen them lose 13 times in 17 trips, giving them the worst awat record in the division. The visitors have been dreadful since the restart, looking unprepared for the run-in. They’ve lost six of their seven matches, with four consecutive losses to nil seeing them concede 12 goals without reply.
While Brescia haven’t lit up the league this season, they’ve at least shown some fight. They returned to action with back to back draws against Fiorentina and Genoa. Since then they’ve beaten Verona and scored twice against Atalanta, which is enough to put the poor travellers to the sword. As a result, a home win our pick, along with a 2-0 victory for Brescia as our correct score prediction given that SPAL have failed to score in more than half their away trips.
