Bristol City vs Peterborough Predictions
- At least three goals have been scored in Bristol City’s last nine Championship home games.
- At least three goals have been scored in seven of Peterborough’s last nine away league contests.
- Bristol City won 3-2 at Peterborough earlier this season.
Pearson’s rocky Robins take on porous Peterborough
Ashton Gate should be the place to see goals on Saturday as two of the Championship’s worst defensive teams – Bristol City and Peterborough United – face off. Only Posh and Reading have conceded more times than Bristol City have this term with manager Nigel Pearson recently changing the way his side defend corners in order to fix one major issue.
Although the Robins didn’t concede from a set-piece in either of their last two games, they still shipped a total of five goals between their home clash with West Brom and trip to Bournemouth last weekend. We’ll see if a free week has enabled more work to be done on the training ground, but one suspects that personnel changes are needed if City are to challenge higher up the table next term.
Pearson’s side have scored more goals than eight of the clubs currently above them and will relish the chance to go up against a team that has conceded 81 times in 40 games. Grant McCann’s men have shown some attacking improvements of late and could have beaten Luton in midweek with better finishing, but it’s been too little and too late for their survival hopes.
Another high-scoring thriller could be on the cards
Posh could spring a surprise here if Bristol City aren’t at it from the start, so we are wary of backing the odds-on hosts when it’s only their second time at shorter than even money this season. The goals markets offer good scope given the previous meeting between these clubs finished 3-2 at Weston Homes Stadium back in October.
A see-saw first 45 minutes saw four goals shared evenly in the first half of that one and it would be no surprise to see four or more registered this Saturday, but the stats suggest taking over 2.5 goals has greater merit. At least three goals have been scored in Bristol City’s last nine Championship home games and also in seven of Peterborough’s last nine away league contests.
A 2-1 correct score play is recommended here because Bristol City have been averaging two goals per home game since the turn of the year while Posh have conceded multiple goals in five of their eight Championship away games over the same period, but average just less than one themselves.
