Burnley vs Southampton Predictions
- Burnley have conceded in each of their last eight games.
- Southampton have managed just one clean sheet in their last eight.
- Both teams have scored in seven of Saints’ last eight away from home and they have conceded in their last 11 trips.
- The Clarets are the team in greater need and may take confidence from a point at West Ham last time out.
Burnley seeking first win after Dyche dismissal
Burnley began their post-Sean Dyche era with a 1-1 draw at West Ham at the weekend and now entertain Southampton on Thursday as they continue their battle for Premier League survival.
Southampton ended a six-match winless run (D1, L5) by beating Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday, although there was more than a hint of ‘smash-and-grab’ about that result as they managed just 24% of the possession and had nine attempts in total to the Gunners’ 23.
Burnley, under the guidance of caretaker boss Mike Jackson, remain without defenders Ben Mee and Erik Pieters for Thursday’s fixture and Ashley Westwood has joined the absentee list after he suffered a serious ankle injury at West Ham, while the visitors have no fresh injury or suspension concerns.
Both teams struggling at the back
Southampton may have kept a shut-out for the first time in seven games against Arsenal, but that was largely due to poor finishing from the Gunners and a fine individual performance from Saints keeper Fraser Forster rather than a strong defensive team performance.
The Clarets have gone eight games without a clean sheet themselves and the continued absences of Mee and Pieters remain a concern, and both teams to score looks like a good option for our main tip given their respective issues at the back.
Clarets the team in greater need
Burnley may have come away with a point from their trip to West Ham but, like Southampton against Arsenal, there was more than a hint of luck about that result despite the fact they missed a penalty.
However, the Clarets are the team in need of points here and Saints appear to have been coasting for a few weeks now, so the hosts look the more likely team to pick up maximum the points and a 2-1 win for Burnley has a chance in the correct score market as the visitors have conceded at least two goals in nine of their last 11 trips and exactly two in four of those.
Finally, an anytime effort from Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet appeals. The Ivorian may have missed from the spot at West Ham but he scored and assisted a goal in Burnley’s 3-2 win against Everton, their last home game. The winger has chipped in with seven goals for the Clarets this term and he looks like the biggest threat for them in this must-win game.
Burnley predicted line-up: Pope, Taylor, Tarkowski, Collins, Lowton, Cornet, Cork, Brownhill, McNeil, Wegohorst, Rodriguez.
Southampton predicted line-up: Fortser, Valery, Lyanco, Bednarek, Walker-Peters, Romeu, Perraud, Armstrong, Broja, Elyounoussi.
- Six of Southampton’s last seven away games in the Premier League have ended with BTTS as a winning bet
