Chelsea vs Southampton Predictions
- Chelsea have lost just one of their last 17 home matches across all competitions
- Southampton have lost eight of their last nine Premier League games
- Enzo Fernandez was on the scoresheet for Chelsea against Aston Villa
Blues can make home comforts count against sorry Saints
Chelsea have been struggling for form over recent weeks, losing three matches on the bounce across all competitions, although all three of those defeats came on the road, with their home form remaining solid.
Enzo Maresca’s side have only lost one of their last 17 matches at Stamford Bridge, a run that dates back to August, and they should prove too strong for the Premier League’s bottom club Southampton.
It has been a sorry season for the Saints, with Saturday’s 4-0 home loss to Brighton – their eighth defeat across their last nine league games – leaving them cut adrift at the bottom of the standings on nine points and a full 13 adrift of safety.
Chelsea were emphatic 5-1 winners when the two teams met at St Mary’s earlier in the season and they should run out convincing victors again as they look to get their top-four push back on track.
Saints can at least trouble the scoresheet
There are at least some crumbs of comfort Southampton can take into this match, not least they were 1-0 winners on their last visit to Stamford Bridge in February 2023.
Ivan Juric also saw his team win their last away fixture 2-1 at relegation rivals Ipswich, while they have scored in each of their previous four road games, including at Manchester United and high-flying Nottingham Forest.
With Chelsea dealing with injury issues at the back and having kept just one clean-sheet across their last 11 matches in all competitions, Southampton are capable of getting on the scoresheet, but that is likely to be as good as it gets.
The Saints have conceded three or more goals in each of their last six Premier League defeats, with three of those matches finishing 3-1 and a repeat of that scoreline would not surprise on Tuesday.
Fernandez to follow up
The goals have not been flowing as much for Chelsea of late, with Nicolas Jackson injured and Cole Palmer not at his influential best, but after drawing a blank against Brighton the previous week, they did get on the scoresheet against Aston Villa on Saturday through Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez benefited from playing in a more advanced position at Villa Park to net his fourth of the season and if he is deployed in a similar role on Tuesday, he will fancy his chances of following up.
