Club Brugge vs Genk Predictions
- Club Brugge ended last season with a 14-match unbeaten run, winning 12 of those games to snatch the Belgian title.
- Brugge have won three of their last four meetings with Genk, winning the other on penalties.
- Genk finished eighth last season – their joint-lowest finish since they came 10th in 2009-10.
Champions look for positive start
The opening weekend of the Belgian First Division A season features a mouth-watering contest between Club Brugge and Genk, both under new management ahead of the new campaign. Having snatched their 18th top-flight title with a blistering run of form at the end of last season, Brugge will be confident of starting the Carl Hoefkens era with a win.
Brugge won 12 of their last 14 games of the 2021-22 campaign to dash Union SG’s title dreams, going unbeaten throughout that sequence and racking up 33 goals. Only Anderlecht – on two occasions – avoided defeat as Alfred Schreuder’s men romped home, and with Barcelona youngster Ferran Jutgla joining their attack and young starlets Charles De Ketelaere and Noa Lang yet to depart, another strong season could beckon.
Genk, meanwhile, are more difficult to predict after finishing eighth last season, their joint-lowest league finish since coming 10th in 2009-10. New boss Wouter Vrancken brought the domestic cup to Mechelen in 2019, but they look hard pushed to compete with Brugge initially; the sides have faced off four times in the last 12 months, with Brugge posting three wins and one penalty shoot-out triumph.
Brugge set for opening-day win
Given their tremendous end to the 2021-22 campaign and terrific record against Genk last season, backing the champions to start with a win looks a prudent play.
Meanwhile, each of the teams’ four previous meetings saw both teams net and over 3.5 goals scored, and they boasted the league’s second and fourth best regular-season attacks last term. An entertaining 3-1 win for the hosts thus looks a decent correct score prediction.
