Colon vs River Plate Predictions
Tuesday’s Argentine Superliga clash sees red-hot River Plate making the trip to Santa Fe to face off with Colon. Both sides are desperate for the points as they look to end the campaign in a Copa Sudamericana spot.
Hosts Colon were hit with a hammer blow last week as they fell to defeat against a direct rival for a continental place, in a 1-0 loss away at Belgrano. Eduardo Domínguez’s troops currently sit outside of the top 10, but have an extra game to play after their game against Velez was suspended a few weeks ago due to the crowd trouble, meaning they sill hold a reasonable chance of making it in.
Nonetheless, with this game against River and a trip to Racing to come, Los Sabaleros will certainly have to be at their best to have any chance. Confidence isn’t exactly at peak levels in the camp, coming in off the back of defeat and having won just 2 of the last 6 games at the Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López, and things look all the more complicated thanks to key forward Javier Correa’s injury in addition to Gonzalo Escobar and Tomás Chancalay’s respective suspensions.
Meanwhile, if you’d have said a couple of months ago that River would go into their final three games with a big shot of securing a continental spot, you’d have been laughed at. Marcelo Gallardo’s troops were in the midst of a fully blown crisis and were near the bottom of the table, but have since risen like a phoenix, with some spectacular form.
Los Millonarios now look back to their old selves and although currently out of the top 10, they also have a game in hand on most of the teams above them. Confidence is flowing in the camp after a 1-0 win away at Colombians Santa Fe midweek, which saw the visitors advance from the group stage of the Libertadores and also made it 10 wins from the last 11 across all competitions.
Ultimately, if River had displayed the kind of form they are in now throughout the campaign, we’d be crowning them champions, rather than seeing if they can salvage a Sudamericana place for next year. The visitors look unstoppable at the moment and will be hungry to keep their momentum going in this one.
At current prices, we’re more than happy to back them do so, with a River win our pick for this clash. Colon have been faltering recently, and with some significant absentees, a visiting River in fine fettle should have too much quality for the hosts. River have won 6 away matches in a row and there’s no reason to believe they won’t build on that streak here, with a 1-0 margin of victory looking on the cards.
