Colorado Rapids vs Real Salt Lake Predictions

Colorado Rapids suffered their eighth defeat in their opening ten matches last weekend, and head into Sunday’s game against Real Salt Lake still without a win to their name this season. The visitor’s form hasn’t been too much better over the last month or so, with Real Salt Lake losing four of their last six matches, but there are eight points separating the two clubs ahead of kick-off.

Colorado Rapids will have been disappointed not to have least picked up a point last time out at home to Vancouver Whitecaps, after the hosts had 55% of the overall possession and created more goal scoring opportunities. Vancouver Whitecaps lead 2-1 at the break, with Kamara converting a penalty late in the half to bring Colorado Rapids back into the match. The very same player equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot early in the second half, but Rubio got sent-off in the seventy-seventh minute and the visitors made their one man advantage count by scoring in the eighty-third minute to claim a 3-2 win. It was a similar story for Real Salt Lake in their home game against Portland Timbers, where the hosts had the majority of the possession and created more chances to score. A missed penalty from Rusnak in the twenty-sixth minute proved costly for Real Salt Lake, as Portland Timbers went on to break the deadlock and lead at halftime. Johnson managed to equalise for the hosts in the sixty-second minute, but shortly after Portland restored their one goal lead and claimed a narrow 2-1 win.

The recent history between these two clubs and their form over the last month in the MLS, suggests that we are in with a very good chance of seeing over 2.5 goals scored in Sunday’s match and that the teams are likely to play out a draw. Five of the last six encounters between these two clubs have produced over 2.5 goals, while five of Colorado Rapids’ and five of Portland Timbers’ last six matches have also seen over 2.5 goals scored. Colorado Rapids haven’t kept a single clean sheet this season, while their guests have only managed two from their opening ten matches. Colorado Rapids have lost their last six matches, and Real Salt Lake have lost four of their last six, which is why we’re backing Sunday’s game to end in a draw.

Kamara top scores for Colorado Rapids with seven MLS goals, while Rusnak leads the way for Real Salt Lake with four, but probably should be on five goals after missing a penalty last time out. We’re confident that over 2.5 goals will be scored in Sunday’s match, and have predicted a final scoreline of 2-2. Both teams head into the game in poor form, but have been involved in a large number of high scoring goals of late. This fixture so often produces goals, and we’re expecting more of the same between two teams that have struggled defensively this season.
