Exeter City to Win

Reason for tip

Exeter look destined for a mid-table finish in League One and will probably welcome the distraction of a cup tie but Oxford’s thoughts may be elsewhere as they continue to push for Championship survival. The Grecians have a reasonable home record in the third tier with 18 points from 13 games and they’ve been competitive in defeat to good teams in their most recent home games. As underdogs, Exeter look backable against a team who may opt to rotate a little for the cup.

Exeter City 2-1

Reason for tip

Exeter can pull off a minor upset by taking out a Championship team but they may need to score twice to get over the line. Both teams have scored in each of the hosts’ last seven games and Oxford have gone four games without drawing a blank, so take a chance on a 2-1 home win.

Exeter City vs Oxford United Predictions

  • Exeter are in mid-table in League One.
  • Oxford will be prioritising Championship survival.
  • Both teams have scored in Exeter’s last seven games.

Underdogs Exeter worth the risk

League One outfit Exeter entertain Oxford United of the Championship in the FA Cup third round on Saturday and as the underdogs the hosts appeal.

Oxford beat Exeter twice in League One last season before going up via the play-offs, but the visitors full focus will be on ensuring they avoid an immediate drop back down. It is a case of so far, so good for The U’s as they sit five points above the drop zone but boss Gary Rowett could be tempted to rotate a little for this cup assignment.

In contrast, Exeter should name their best XI considering their position in League One – 10 points adrift of sixth and 11 clear of 21st. The Grecians have lost three of their last five at home but they’ve had some tough games and have been competitive in all of those defeats, and they can make home advantage count against an Oxford side who may view the cup this year as an unwelcome distraction.

A 2-1 win for Exeter is the correct score pick as both teams have scored in their last seven games and Oxford have scored in four consecutive games, so the hosts may need to strike more than once to get a win over the line.
