Fulham vs Chelsea Predictions
- Fulham have won three of their last four home Premier League games
- Chelsea have lost five of their last seven away league matches
- Ryan Sessegnon has scored in Fulham’s last two home league games
Fulham seek first league double over Blues
Fulham will attempt to do the league double over Chelsea for the first time in their history when they entertain their west London rivals at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Marco Silva’s men stunned the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day, sparking a downward spiral for Enzo Maresca’s side.
Chelsea have won five, lost five and drawn four of their subsequent 14 Premier League matches and now occupy sixth place in the Premier League table, only three spots above Fulham. They come into this clash off the back of a Conference League home defeat to Legia Warsaw which only succeeded in darkening the mood around Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s away form is among the worst in the Premier League right now with only two points taken from their last seven road trips, so it is surprising to see them installed as the 6/4 favourites to claim three points on Sunday.
Inconsistent Cottagers stuck in a win-loss pattern
The odds probably reflect Fulham’s inconsistency because they continually frustrate their fans by failing to get a run going. Following the superb 3-2 home win over runaway leaders Liverpool earlier this month, the Cottagers came up short in a 1-0 away defeat to Bournemouth last Monday.
That maintains an alternating seven-game sequence of wins and losses which, if it were to continue, would lead to a win over Chelsea. It is never as simple as that when these two sides meet, however, with recent meetings rarely producing many goals or convincing winners.
Fulham have won three of their last four home league matches and had the better of a couple of other Craven Cottage clashes that didn’t fall their way. The squad is generally in good form with matchwinners like Rodrigo Muniz, Antonee Robinson and Ryan Sessegnon shining of late.
Unsettled Blues’ backline is a concern
Sessegnon, who was the unfortunate victim of a substitition error when Fulham were chasing the game at Bournemouth, has revived his career in the past couple of months and could be worth backing to get a goal on Sunday. He is keeping Adama Traore and Willian out of the line-up at the moment after registering two goals and an assist in his last five appearances.
Chelsea’s defence has been worrisome for some time with the injury problems of their best defender Wesley Fofana leading Maresca to chop and change in search of the right combination. Tosin Adarabioyo was replaced at half-time against Ipswich when they were 2-0 down and he seems unlikely to start against his former club.
The goalkeeping situation also remaisn unsettled and that may just give the edge to Fulham here, who look good value to get the win they need to maintain their European ambitions. A repeat of the 2-1 Boxing Day win could be on the cards if they can avoid the sloppy start that cost themk dearly against the Cherries.
