Germany vs Estonia Predictions
Germany come into this clash in an odd position – trailing Northern Ireland in their qualifying group. Both sides have won 100% of their matches, but the Germans have a game in hand. While this group should be a straightforward proposition for both Germany and the Netherlands, NI are showing that neither side can afford to slip up right now. That means that Germany will be out to continue their perfect start when they clash with Estonia in Mainz this week.
The Germans won 2-0 at Belarus on Saturday night, a victory which saw them hardly break a sweat. That win followed up a 3-2 success over Holland in their opening group game, which has Germany on course for Euro 2020. The hosts will be aiming to build up some momentum over the coming months, as they look to improve on their poor group stage exit in Russia last year. Joachim Low has taken steps to rebuild this team, with this fresh, youthful side set to take them to the Euros.
Estonia were beaten 2-1 at home by Northern Ireland on Saturday, despite leading for almost an hour of the game. The Ulster-men were able to score twice in three minutes late on to make it three wins from three, which has put them ahead of Germany in this group. However, Estonia are unlikely to get as close to pulling off a shock against the Germans, as they search for a first away win in the European qualifiers since 2011.
Estonia haven’t just struggled in away games in European Championship qualifying, they’ve failed to score in their last six, including a defeat in Belfast back in March. They finished off their World Cup qualifying campaign with blanks at Cyprus and Greece, while we expect this German defence to more than comfortably deal with Estonia. The hosts conceded only once at home in World Cup qualifying, which came in their final game against Azerbaijan. They won all of the rest to nil, scoring plenty along the way.
Germany scored 23 goals across their five home qualifiers last time out, while Estonia conceded eight at Belgium and five at Bosnia. We expect Germany to rack up plenty of goals here, while they should keep a clean sheet. That has us backing over 2.5 goals and both teams to score – no in this clash. We’re backing Germany to score at least three goals and keep a clean sheet, which seems like value given the gulf between the two sides.
