Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

England will arrive in Athens seeking revenge for last month’s 2-1 defeat to Greece, and they may have to work hard if they are to exact it. Both teams have scored in six of the Three Lions’ last eight games and after conceding to Finland last time, it is fair to assume Thursday’s hosts, who have won five matches on the spin, will net at least one.

England 2-1

Reason for tip

While Greece should have enough to score, they may see their winning streak snapped on Thursday. Lee Carsley named an unusual lineup for the loss at Wembley and is unlikely to be as bold this time. Harry Kane should return to the side and he can lead the Three Lions to a 2-1 victory.

Both teams to score

Reason for tip

Greece have scored nine times in four games under new manager Ivan Jovanovic, but they conceded against England at Wembley and the Three Lions have notched in each of their last eight games.

Anastasios Bakasetas to score or assist

Reason for tip

Anastasios Bakasetas scored his 16th international goal last time out and had provided three assists in his three UEFA Nations League appearances before that.

Greece to receive the most cards

Reason for tip

Greece were carded four times at Wembley and have been shown more cards than their opponents in all four of their UEFA Nations League ties so far, while England have only picked up four cards in total across this period.

Manolis Siopis to be shown a card

Reason for tip

Holding midfielder Dimitrios Kourbelis is suspended for this tie but fellow midfield enforcer Manolis Siopis was booked in Dublin in September and one of Greece’s holding midfielders has been carded in three of their four UEFA Nations League ties.

Greece vs England Predictions

  • Greece have won their last five games, with four of those victories coming to nil
  • Both teams have scored in six of England’s last eight matches
  • There were four goals the last time Greece hosted a side ranked in the top ten of Fifa’s world rankings, drawing 2-2 with France in 2023

England eager to make amends

Lee Carsley all but ruled himself out of the running for the permanent role as England boss during the last international break thanks to a calamitous performance against Greece.

An experimental lineup featuring no striker and an abundance of playmakers backfired massively as the Three Lions were beaten 2-1 at Wembley and while Carsley has stated he never wanted the job, there is every chance he was just saving face.

Thomas Tuchel has since been announced as Gareth Southgate’s successor, with Carsley remaining in charge for the final international break of 2024, which begins with a trip to Athens for an England side out to make amends for October’s shock defeat.

Hot hosts can net again

Greece will be feeling confident of replicating their surprise win, though, having followed up their 2-1 success at Wembley with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ireland.

Thursday’s hosts have been sensational in this season’s Nations League, winning all five of their matches and recording four clean sheets in a brilliant run, and they are sure to give another good showing against the Three Lions, who have struggled for clean sheets of late.

Both teams have scored in six of England’s last eight matches, with the Three Lions conceding to Finland last time out, and a spate of injuries in defence suggests the same bet may land again in Athens.

Exciting encounter expected in Athens

Harry Maguire, John Stones and Luke Shaw are all absent, with first call-ups for Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Lewis Hall highlighting how short the Euro 2024 runners-up are in defence.

They do still have plenty of in-form attackers, though, with Harry Kane, Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka enjoying a strong start to the campaign and the Three Lions can also find the net in Athens.

Greece’s last visit from a top-five nation – France in 2023 – resulted in a 2-2 thriller and a similar level of scoring could occur on Thursday, potentially just going in the visitors’ favour.
