Greece vs Scotland Predictions
- Greece have won six of their last seven matches
- The home side have kept five clean sheets during that run
- Scotland have lost six of their last nine games on the road
Greek prospects are on the up
Scotland gave themselves a Nations League lifeline in the second half of their group campaign, but their Group A status may be hanging by a threat after the first leg of their playoff against Greece in Piraeus on Thursday.
The Greeks are regarded as one of the up-and-coming nations on the European international football scene, and they accumulated the same number of points as England in Group B, winning five of their six matches, including a memorable 2-1 success at Wembley.
It has been their defensive resolve that has been particularly impressive – the Three Lions, who gained revenge with a 3-0 win in Athens that proved decisive, are the only team to have scored against Greece in their last seven outings – and Scotland face a massive task to avoid heading to Sunday’s second leg at Hampden still in the tie.
Scots need to pick up on the road
Steve Clarke’s side were staring into the abyss after beginning their campaign with three straight defeats, which extended a dismal run of 15 matches in which their only victory came against Gibraltar.
However, against the odds, they posted victories over Poland and Croatia, and a goalless draw against Portugal that has given them a chance to remain in the top bracket.
The worry for Clarke is that they have lost six of their last nine away games and while they have scored in ten of their last 12 matches on the road, this is a tougher than normal defence they face, so the Greeks should claim a first-leg advantage and correct-score punting enthusiasts are pointed towards a 2-0 win.
