Halmstad saw their unbeaten streak come to an end in emphatic fashion at the weekend. They came into a match with relegation threatened Frej having not lost any of their last six games and with four wins under their belts during that period.

However, a goal in the first minute from Frej put them on the back foot, and they lost concentration again just before half time as Frej netted two more before the break. Halmstad mounted a tame comeback just after the restart when they scored in the 49th minute, but they couldn’t seem to get any more luck in front of goal. Frej added a 4th with 17 minutes remaining and then wrapped the victory up three minutes later before Halmstad bagged a consolation goal.

This was a shocking result for the Swedish Superettan leaders, but fortunately they retained their top spot. They lead AFC United on goal difference and are now just a point ahead of 3rd placed Sirius and 4th placed Dalkurd as well. They will want to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible to avoid seeing their race for instant re-promotion back to the Allsvenskan get put under threat.

Varnamo aren’t far behind the leaders either. Their 2-0 win over 2nd placed AFC United may have allowed Halmstad to hold on to the top spot, but it brought 5th placed Varnamo to within four points of them. A win for them on Thursday could see them move into the top three.

The visitors have only won three of their last six though and have lost twice during this period, with both of their defeats coming away from home. This makes them winless in three away games and having only won two of their six games on the road.

Halmstad, on the other hand, have won four of their six home games this season and lost just once. They have managed to keep a clean sheet in all but one of their home games too, so it could be difficult for Varnamo on Thursday. I think the hosts can get another home win in this one, and odds of 5/6 for this outcome look excellent value. I’m going for a 2-0 correct score prediction due to Halmstad’s excellent defensive record at home as well.
