England kick-off Nations League campaign
England kick-off their Nations League campaign this week as they continue to build towards this winter’s World Cup. The Three Lions take some good form into their meeting with Hungary, while they have fond memories of this competition.
Gareth Southgate’s side made the semis in this competition back in 2019, a big part of their growth on the international stage. They fell short behind Belgium last time out, while this edition poses big threats in the shape of Italy and Germany.
Hungary out of their depth?
The hosts were promoted into the top tier of the Nations League after a successful campaign, but they still dropped seven points against Russia, Hungary and Serbia. Stepping up to face three of Europe’s biggest sides will be a tall order for them.
While the Hungarians gave a good account of themselves on the pitch at Euro 2020, they struggled after the tournament. They lost three of their first four games post-Euros to blow any World Cup ambitions, with a 4-0 home defeat by England among those losses.
Kane to capitalise on home struggles
The hosts have been beaten in three of their last five home games, failing to score in each of those defeats. They include losses to Albania and Serbia as well as England’s crushing World Cup qualifying win from September.
Meanwhile, England are on a fine run, having scored 20 goals across their last four games, recording four straight victories. Since the Euros they’ve recorded 4-0, 5-0 and 10-0 wins on the road, so back them to swat aside Hungary with a -1 handicap the best way to do that.
The visitors have an in-form Harry Kane in tow and the Spurs striker is chasing Wayne Rooney’s scoring record here. Kane finished the season with five goals in five games and he’s scored eight across his last four internationals, so back him to fire the Three Lions to a 3-0 victory.
