Slovenia To Win To Nil

Reason for tip

Kazakhstan have not registered in any of their three Nations League games this year and will probably lose without scoring against Slovenia, who have kept three clean sheets in their last five games.

Slovenia 2-0

Reason for tip

Slovenia beat Kazakhstan 3-0 at home last month and faced only three shots on target. They can win away from home by a similar scoreline, although 2-0 might be the likelier outcome.

Hawks aren’t being helped by new home

Out-of-form Kazakhstan could suffer another Nations League defeat on Sunday when they play host to Slovenia in Almaty.

Unlike when the sides last met in Kazakhstan, this match will be played on a grass pitch and in an open stadium with an athletics track that does not help the home fans build any atmosphere.

That may help explain why the Hawks’ home results have dipped since their last qualifying campaign when their artificial pitch was a bit of a leveller. Stanislav Cherchesov’s side are also struggling to cope with the step up in class after earning promotion from Nations League C.

Sesko can set Slovenia on the path to victory

They were fortunate to draw their League B opener against Norway after the visitors missed two open goals, but the following results – a 3-0 defeat in Slovenia and a 4-0 loss in Austria – loom about right based on expected goals.

Kazakhstan have a combined xG of 1.2 through three games in this group and look unlikely to score against a Slovenia side with three clean sheets in their last five outings.

Matjaz Kek’s men were well beaten by Norway on Thursday, but are a good enough to bounce back with a win to nil of their own.  With RB Leipzig hitman Benjamin Sesko in top form at the moment, their prospects of grabbing a couple of goals in Almaty look good.
