Liechtenstein vs Gibraltar Predictions
Sunday sees the two “minnows” of League D Group 4 go head to head as Liechtenstein take on Gibraltar. Whilst it looks very difficult for either side to gain promotion to League C, there is no relegation in the bottom tier so it essentially gives teams a free reign to give it a go.
Liechtenstein are a team in absolutely woeful form, they have lost 16 of their last 18 games, drawing 1 and a solitary win which came against Qatar. The story isn’t much better on home soil, they have lost 14 of their last 16 home friendlies with 2 wins in that period coming against Andorra and San Marino, both of which were 1-0 wins.
Gibraltar are a relatively new nation on the scene, however they are no better than their UEFA Nations League opponents. They have lost 24 of their last 26 games with one draw and one win, that coming against San Marino 1-0. Gibraltar weren’t disgraced in their UEFA Nations League opener at home to Macedonia but they looked in no way capable of pulling off an upset, going down 2-0.
This really is a game of who is better on the night, as both sides are catastrophically woeful. Liechtenstein have lost their last 14 competitive fixtures before the Nations League to an aggregate score of 53-1. They did however manage to find the score-sheet in the opening game of Group D away at Armenia and were only 15 minutes away from getting a point. Could it be the case that by playing nations of their own quality we could see Liechtenstein improve and find some confidence?
Gibraltar are equally awful in competitive fixtures, they have played 20 games before the start of the Nations League and lost all 20. They fell to a 2-0 defeat in their opener in this competition against Macedonia and really didn’t look like scoring in that match.
Looking at games against superior opposition isn’t going to help us find a winner here so we delve into the lesser nations and find that Liechtenstein aren’t all that bad against these sides. They beat Qatar, drawn to Finland, drawn at Gibraltar (Non-Fifa Friendly). They also picked up 4 points against Moldova in World Cup 2018 Qualifying. They rarely lose to these minnow nations and we don’t see them losing here. Liechtenstein are trading at 1/3 and that is way too short for a team who don’t win very often.
Both of these sides are very goal-shy and that does not change when playing similar level opposition. For that reason the odds available on Under 2.5 goals being scored in the match looks very good indeed. We see this being a snatch and grab and it’s likely to be Liechtenstein that gets the goal so we will also be backing the hosts to win 1-0 on the Correct Score Market.
