Vital week for the Reds

Liverpool’s success in Europe means they’ve got a bye week in the Europa League, but they will face two vital matches in a matter of days. Before they head to Wembley on Sunday for the Carabao Cup final, the Reds face Luton aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds were 4-1 winners at Brentford at the weekend with Mohamed Salah returning to the squad. However, injuries continue to haunt them, with as many as nine players potentially missing for this one. While Jurgen Klopp’s side continue to look good going forward, they could be missing Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip at the back on Wednesday.

Luton’s unbeaten away run in jeopardy

Wednesday is a tough clash for the visitors, as only four promoted teams have ever won their first-ever Premier League visit to Anfield. They also visit a Liverpool side who rarely slip up on their own turf, with Klopp’s team long only one of their last 54 Premier League games at Anfield, winning 19 of their last 24.

However, Luton have put together a five-game unbeaten run on the road which includes a visit to Merseyside. The Hatters have won cup visits to Bolton and Everton in that run, while they picked up a point in a 4-4 draw with Newcastle in their last away trip.

While Luton were expected to make Kenilworth Road a tough place to go, they’ve suffered consecutive home defeats ahead of this trip which includes a 3-1 defeat against bottom side Sheffield United. Sunday also brought a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, their sixth defeat in seven meetings with the top six this season.

Defensive concerns remain for Liverpool

Injuries at the back remain an issue for Liverpool, who have kept just two clean sheets across their last 10 games ahead of this match. The Reds have won four of their last five games while conceding, with each of the last seven games at Anfield seeing both teams score.

The hosts have won 17 of 19 home matches this term so they should have little fear of an upset, but Luton are in great scoring form. Both teams have scored in 12 of the Hatters’ last 15, while nine of their last 10 away trips have also seen both teams find the net. Liverpool have been free-scoring this season and they can overcome missing out on a clean sheet once again.

The hosts will expect Salah’s return to help them going forward, but Luis Diaz stands out in the anytime scorer market.
