Manchester United and Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Manchester United have shown signs of finding their feet under Ruben Amorim in their last two performances and they should prove too strong for bottom of the table Southampton, who have won just once in the league all season.  The Saints can score though, with United having now gone 10 matches without a clean-sheet.

Manchester United 3-1

Reason for tip

A comfortable home win is expected with Manchester United capable of scoring three times, just as they did at St Mary’s earlier in the season, but given the hosts are without a clean-sheet in 10 matches, a 3-1 correct score appeals, with Southampton having lost by that scoreline three times on the road already this season.

Bruno Fernandes To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

All seven of Bruno Fernandes’ goals for Manchester United this season have come since the end of October, the latest of which was in Sunday’s FA Cup success over Arsenal.  The United skipper also has three career goals against Southampton and is more than capable of adding to that tally on Thursday.

Manchester United vs Southampton Predictions

  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 16 meetings with Southampton
  • The Red Devils have conceded in each of their last 10 matches
  • Southampton are the only team yet to win away from home in the Premier League this season

United may have turned a corner

Manchester United may have failed to win any of their last six matches across all competitions inside 90 minutes, but they have shown signs in their last two performances that they are now finding their feet under Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils followed up an impressive 2-2 draw at leaders Liverpool in their last league fixture with Sunday’s penalty shootout triumph at Arsenal in the FA Cup, a match that finished 1-1 after extra time despite United playing for an hour with ten men.

Those results and performances should have boosted United’s confidence ahead of this home clash with bottom of the table Southampton, while Thursday’s hosts also have an impressive recent record when facing the Saints, as they are unbeaten in the last 16 meetings between the two sides.

That sequence includes a 9-0 success for United at Old Trafford in 2021, although their two home meetings with Southampton since then have both finished all-square.

Cup win unlikely to spark Southampton upturn

Like United, Southampton also enjoyed success in the FA Cup at the weekend, as they comfortably dispatched Championship outfit Swansea 3-0 at St Mary’s Stadium to hand manager Ivan Juric his first win since taking charge last month.

That result also snapped an 11-match winless run across all competitions for the Saints, but they remain with just one league success to their name all season and are cut adrift at the bottom of the standings.

The south coast club are the only team yet to win on the road in the Premier League this term and their last victory at Old Trafford came almost nine years ago when a late Charlie Austin goal secured them a 1-0 victory in January 2016.

Fernandes could be catalyst to home win

United triumphed in September’s reverse meeting between these sides 3-0 and they should be able to score another three goals and win on Thursday, although a clean-sheet may elude them, as they have conceded in each of their last 10 games across all competitions, bringing the 3-1 correct score into play.

Buoyed by the three goals they scored against Swansea, Southampton are certainly capable of getting on the scoresheet, with youngster Tyler Dibling, who grabbed a brace in the cup, likely to be a threat.

The goals have tended to be shared around by United this season, but after netting his seventh of the campaign against Arsenal last time out, captain Bruno Fernandes could provide the host’s main goal threat.

Fernandes has scored three times in eight appearances against Southampton and after registering an assist when the teams met at St Mary’s in September, he could add his own name to the scoresheet on Thursday.
