Over 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

At least three goals have been scored in five of Metz’s last six matches while over 2.5 goals has landed in Rennes’ last three games. Both clubs have been susceptible when leading lately, but each have produced comebacks with late goals so this match looks set to be a thriller.

Draw 2-2

Reason for tip

Metz have scored exactly two goals in two of their last three home games and conceded an average of 2.0 goals per game in their five most recent fixtures at Stade Saint-Symphorien. Rennes have averaged 2.0 goals across their last eight road games, but have kept only two clean sheets in that span. A 2-2 draw is as good a shout as anything for a match which screams goals.

Georges Mikautadze To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Georges Mikautadze has scored nine goals in Metz’s last nine Ligue 1 matches, including six in their last four contests. He takes penalties and should get opportunities to notch against a Rennes’ rearguard that allowed Brest to score five times last weekend.

Metz and Rennes have equal motivation

Metz and Rennes will not lack motivation to win Saturday’s Ligue 1 match at Stade Saint-Symphorien and it could make for a cracking clash.

The hosts are third-bottom in the standings, level on points with Le Havre in the first position of safety. But defeat at home to Lille last weekend means they are running out of games to leapfrog their relegation rivals.

Rennes sit ninth in the table, but as long as PSG complete the double then they are only two points off claiming a European place for next season.

Both clubs have similar faults

Julien Stéphan’s men will still be smarting from how they threw away points at home to Brest last weekend. After two Arnaud Kalimuendo strikes in the first 10 minutes, they fell 4-2 behind in the second half before dragging themselves back onto level terms with 10 minutes to go.

But Lilian Brassier won it for the Champions League-chasing visitors in stoppage time. After losing an early lead against Toulouse three weeks ago, Stephan will be concerned that his team are loosening their grip on games.

Metz are in a similar mood at the moment and have often played their best football when behind. The ingredients are there for this match to feature many goals and the recent statistics for both clubs point to over 2.5 goals being the best bet.
