Danes can delight the home crowd

Midtjylland made light work of Andorran outfit UE Santa Coloma in the previous Champions League qualifying round and, while a tougher test awaits against Hungarian side Ferencvaros, they can claim a first-leg lead.

The Danish side are a potent force on home soil, where they have lost only two of their last 17 competitive matches, and they are an experienced outfit at this stage of the competition.

Midtjylland were in the Champions League group stage as recently as 2020–21 and in 2022–23 they made the knockout stages of the Europa League, coming through a group featuring Lazio, Feyenoord and Sturm Graz.

Ferencvaros are no weak link and they came past The New Saints 7-1 on aggregate in the previous round, although in Wales they only prevailed 2-1 with Philippe Rommens’s penalty proving the decisive goal.

Away from home, the Hungarian side have won only three of their 13 Champions League qualifiers since 2020.

These two met in Europa League qualifying seven seasons ago with Midtjylland winning both home and away and winning 7-3 on aggregate. Plenty may have changed since then but the Danes may still hold the aces, particularly at their home fortress.

It is bound to be a cagey first-leg contest and correct-score punters should side with a slender 1-0 victory for Thomas Thomasberg’s Danes.
