Goals at both ends expected in Montpellier

Lyon’s strong attack will be up against a leaky Montpellier defence when the teams meet at Stade de la Mosson on Sunday. Lyon have scored 36 goals and conceded 26 in 21 league games this season, while Montpellier have shipped 48 and scored 20 in the same number of matches. 

It’s an intriguing one and the best bet is to back both teams to find the net here.

Lyon are sixth in Ligue 1, nine places and 18 points above rock-bottom Montpellier, with the visitors on nine wins, six draws and six defeats from their 21 games this season, while the hosts have just four wins so far.

Montpellier are finding life tough, having sustained two successive Ligue 1 reverses. For their part, Lyon have been in patchy form recently, with two wins, two draws and two defeats in their last six league games, but they were 4-0 winners against Reims in their most recent outing and have won the last two head-to-heads with Montpellier.

Seven of the last nine Ligue 1 meetings between these sides have seen both teams find the net and six of the last eight games that Montpellier have hosted Lyon in the league have also ended with both sides scoring.

With both defences struggling, there should be goals in this game. Montpellier have yet to keep a clean sheet at home this season and no team has conceded more in Ligue 1 this season than their 48 goals against. For their part, Lyon have failed to keep a clean sheet in two of their last three league games.

Lyon have beaten Montpellier by a single goal in five of the last seven Ligue 1 clashes and the 2-1 win for Lyon looks a decent correct-score bet. Lyon won 1-0 last time they met Montpellier, but both sides have scored in 12 of the previous 15.
