Palmeiras vs Atletico GO Predictions

No value in Verdão as games come thick and fast 

Palmeiras’ leadership of Serie A should survive the test offered by Atletico-GO on Thursday, but it might be quite a dry contest in terms of goalscoring. Verdão maintained their solid form with a 2-0 away win at Coritiba on Sunday that saw them record a sixth straight league clean sheet and eighth from their last nine games.

Abel Ferreira has been rotating his side and, as this will be their third game in a week and fourth in 11 days, should do so again to retain some measure of freshness. The Copa Libertadores holders look set to be even stronger in defence for this one given Paraguayan centre-back Gustavo Gómez -the team captain – has returned to Sao Paulo after international duty kept him out of Palmeiras’ last three games.

Atletico-GO are in decent nick, having lost just once in their last five league games – which was away to title-contending Corinthians. Dragão aren’t terrible defensively and should offer some stiff resistance to a Palmeiras attack that found it easy to bypass Botafogo’s shambolic backline on their last outing at Allianz Parque.

Both teams have been involved in low-scoring games

At a decent premium to the hosts’ match result price, the ‘unders’ can be backed at around 21/20 – surprising considering the majority of both sides’ league games in the past two months have failed to see a third goal scored. Fewer than three goals have been scored in nine of Atletico-GO’s last ten games in all competitions and in seven of the hosts’ last ten league contests, suggesting there is serious value to be had in the odds-against price.

Palmeiras have won three and drawn two of their five home Serie A games to date this year and, although too short for us in the betting, are still the most likely winners. Noting how Atletico-GO have shipped only four goals in their last four away games, backing the hosts for a 1-0 victory could well turn out to be the best approach.
