End of the road for Argyle

Plymouth Argyle brightened a dire campaign with a shock 1-0 win at Brentford last month. That upset has teed them up for a Fourth Round clash with Liverpool, but that’s set to be the end of the road for their run.

Argyle are bottom of the Championship and on their way back to League One. Their clashes with the best Championship sides have been one-sided, having lost 3-0 at Leeds and 2-0 at Sheffield United.

Overall, Plymouth have lost to nil in all four clashes with the Championship’s top three, which includes the bottom two from last season’s Premier League. Even the arrival of new manager Miron Muslic hasn’t turned things around for the host, as he suffered a 5-0 home defeat to second-placed Burnley last month shortly after taking over.

Plymouth won’t face the full might of the Premier League leaders here, but they will come across a rotated Liverpool side which thumped Accrington Stanley 4-0 in the last round. The Reds also rotated heavily for a trip to PSV Eindhoven, losing 3-2 to the Dutch champions.

The Reds should have too much for the Championship strugglers. Expect a player of Harvey Elliot’s standard to shine here. He has scored in Liverpool’s previous two Champions League games and he had a couple of efforts at goal against Accrington.
