Portugal vs Estonia Predictions

Portugal were dismal in their friendly against England last Thursday, although the hosts weren’t much better in truth. It was a generally drab game that neither team seemed bothered about winning, and about the only thing of note to happen was Bruno Alves being sent off for a ridiculously high kick on Harry Kane and then a late Chris Smalling winner.

The visiting Portuguese side managed zero shots on target without their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, and it looks like they will once again be relying solely on his talents in the European Championships. He’s expected to play on Wednesday though, so we might see a revitalised Portugal side.

They did manage to beat Norway 3-0 without him in their first warm up game, but they have still lost three of their last six matches. This includes a 1-0 defeat in Russia and a shock home loss to Bulgaria to go with their loss against England.

Estonia shouldn’t be providing too much of a challenge for them though. They have won just won of their last six games and have lost to the likes of Serbia and Lithuania during this period. Their only victory came in a 2-0 win over Andorra, which they followed up with a goalless draw at home to Latvia on Saturday.

The visitors lack of goals is a real issue, and is the main reason that they could only muster ten points in Euro 2016 qualifying. They only scored four goals in their ten matches and have only scored three in their last six. Four of these six matches saw them end without a goal.

With Cristiano Ronaldo back up front for Portugal I’m expecting them to have a lot more luck in front of goal than they did against England. Estonia aren’t the worst side defensively, but I just can’t see them getting a goal away at Portugal. Portugal have scored two or more goals in four of their last seven matches as well, so odds of 8/15 for a Portugal -1 Handicap Win offer some value despite their short look. I’m going for a 2-0 correct score prediction at 4/1 as well.
