Draw/Real Madrid

Reason for tip

Real Madrid have been level at the break with the last three Bundesliga clubs they have hosted in the Champions League, going on to win twice. Meanwhile, Stuttgart have earned a reputation as fast starters in the Bundesliga, where four of their seven Bundesliga goals this term inside the opening 22 minutes. Additionally, Real Madrid have outscored their opponents in their last four La Liga matches, having been behind or level at the break each time.

Real Madrid 3-1

Reason for tip

Real Madrid scored three goals without reply at home to Real Valladolid and saw off Real Betis 2-0 at home too, but they face a team with in-form strikers here that look capable of getting a goal. The defending champions will no doubt want to put on a show in this competition they have made their own with a 3-1 scoreline looking like it might be the outcome.

Stuttgart could surprise Spanish giants with a fast start

Look for Stuttgart to make another fast start when they return to the Champions League with a glamourous tie against Real Madrid at Estadio Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.

Die Roten have been quick out of the blocks in all three of their Bundesliga matches this term, scoring the first goal each time and leading

Real Madrid have been fairly sluggish by comparison with only one of their nine goals in La Liga having come before the interval. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are a very experienced unit and have generally not needed to chase matches anyway as they have only trailed in one of their five league contests so far.

Vinicius Junior unlikely to play second fiddle

The holders have won nine of their last 12 home Champions League matches, including wins over Bundesliga sides Union Berlin in last season’s group stage and Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

On each occasion, as well as in their round of 16 home tie with RB Leipzig, Ancelotti’s side were level at half-time, so there is precedent for this clash to be closely fought one until Real move through the gears later on.

Much of the pre-match media attention has fallen on Kylian Mbappe as he starts his quest for a Champions League winner’s medal at his third professional club. But Vinicius Junior, who is sharing spot-kick duties with the French forward, has been in just as good goalscoring form in this competition and enters this game with strikes in his last two La Liga matches.
