Sociedad still looking for a spark

Real Sociedad will attempt to win their first game in more than a month when they host fellow strugglers Valencia at the Anoeta this weekend. Imanol Alguacil’s side returned from France with a Europa League point after Remiro’s penalty save earned a 1-1 away draw in Nice on Wednesday.

Although they took the lead in that game, the Basques were second best for much of it and were fortunate that Nice squandered further chances to win in the closing minutes.

Domestically, the picture has been just as dismal with Socieded suffering three consecutive home defeats at the start of the season. Alguacil’s men need to shake off their torpor for the clash with Los Che, who finally seem to have found their identity this season.

Valencia have a clean sheet mentaility

Ruben Baraja’s side took only one point from their first five games to leave many wondering if this would be a season of struggle but a subsequent 2-0 home win over Girona was followed by another clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against high-flying Osasuna.

Los Che will look to keep things tight again when they head north and there should be no expectations of a goal fest at the Anoeta. Valencia are still without the services of Rafa Mir while Hugo Duro, last season’s top scorer, may be only fit enough for a bench role.

Three of the last six meetings of these clubs have finished 0-0 or 1-1 and with Real Sociedad having recorded three draws with fewer than three goals in the last handful of matches that looks like the obvious play here.
