Georgia did the Irish a massive favour on Friday night by beating Scotland in Tbilisi. That has allowed Ireland to re-take 3rd place in the group and if they can complete the double over Georgia here then they will be in pole position to make the play-offs.
Ireland haven’t been particularly impressive under Martin O’Neill. They picked up a routine 4-0 win away to whipping boys Gibraltar on Friday but having already failed to win home games with Poland and Scotland, they will know that they cannot afford a slip-up here.
Irish football may not be in a great state right now but they should still have the edge over Georgia who have been unimpressive in this group before their win against the Scots, who have a habit of tripping up in those types of games. Ireland won 2-1 in Georgia on matchday 1 thanks to an Aiden McGeady brace and have just a little bit of extra quality that may prove decisive.
Georgia still have a very slim chance of making 3rd place but realistically would have to win in Dublin and that is something that could play into Irish hands. With nothing at stake they could well have come here and parked the bus and made things very difficult for an Irish sides that isn’t the most creative. However with that glimmer of hope, they may be a bit more positive and that could lead to a little more space in the attacking third for Ireland to exploit in what is still likely to be a very tight game.
They are also quite an experienced side with the likes of Shay Given and Robbie Keane veterans of numerous tense qualification campaigns and their experience could prove crucial on a night like this.
Therefore Ireland should have enough to just squeeze out a win. Georgia failed to score on their trips to Poland and Scotland, who are loosely speaking at least fairly evenly matched with Ireland, who have the joint best defensive record in this group having conceded just 5 times in 7 matches. Therefore backing Ireland to win to nil at 11/10 looks like a solid bet.
It is likely to be a very tense night in Dublin and Ireland don’t possess the sort of quality that makes you think they will run away with it. So if you’re looking for a correct score bet then backing Ireland to win 1-0 at 4/1 is worth a punt.
