Freiburg vs Werder Bremen Predictions

  • Werder Bremen were beaten in 12 of their last 13 Bundesliga matches.
  • Freiburg won two of their last three Bundesliga home games.
  • Werder Bremen scored in all but two of their 13 away games this term.
  • Bremen conceded twice or more in 10 of those 13 encounters.

Freiburg impress at Leipzig

Freiburg kicked back into gear after the Bundesliga’s return by earning a valuable point in a credible 1-1 draw at title outsiders RB Leipzig – a result that keeps them firmly in the hunt for a top six finish this season.

Christian Streich’s charges gave as good as they got against a highly-rated Roten Bullen outfit, and one point might have been three had Robin Koch’s 92nd minute strike not been chalked off in controversial circumstances by VAR.

Nevertheless, a draw at one of the Bundesliga’s leading sides represents an excellent return from their first day back at the office, and Freiburg will be confident that they can follow that positive result up with a win at home to struggling Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Werder inch towards relegation

For Werder Bremen, things just keep going from bad to worse, and if their supporters were searching for signs of fight from their team in their battle to beat the drop, then little was evident during their 4-1 battering at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

The defeat was Werder’s 10th in 12 Bundesliga contests since early December last year, and in present form Die Werderaner, who are nine points from safety, look like exiting the German top-flight for the first time since 1980 with a whimper.

Werder manager Florian Kohfeldt will welcome defender Ludwig Augustinsson and midfielder Davy Klaassen back to the fold this week from injury and suspension respectively, though we’re not predicting this to be a catalyst for a change in fortunes.

Bremen have picked up more points on the road than they have at home this term, though they left the majority of their positive away performances behind them in the early parts of the campaign, and were turned over in four of their last six games as the visiting team before Saturday’s assignment.

Freiburg worth backing

The manner of their hefty defeat to Bayer would have eroded what little self-belief was left in the Werder ranks this week and we think Freiburg, energised by their display at Leipzig, look well placed to capitalise.

The hosts won two of their last three Bundesliga fixtures at the Schwarzwald-Stadion and they look well priced to take another three points against relegation certainties Werder this weekend.

With an average of just 1.33 goals per 90 minutes at home in 2019/20, Freiburg shouldn’t be expected to cut loose however, and their lack of genuine firepower up front makes a narrow margin of victory likely.

Bremen scored in all but two of their 13 Bundesliga away games this season, though their record of conceding twice or more at the other end in 10 of those fixtures points to a defensive weakness that just about any team in the division can exploit.

With those factors considered, we like the look of a 2-1 home win for our correct score prediction.
