Scotland vs Switzerland Predictions
- Switzerland have won three of their last four after an impressive opening win
- Scotland were thumped 5-1 against Germany
- The Scots have now only beaten Gibraltar across their last 10 internationals
- Dan Ndoye had three shots against Hungary and he should trouble Scotland with his positioning
Superb start for Swiss
Switzerland made the perfect start to Euro 2024 with a 3-1 victory over Hungary in Cologne and they’re back at the same ground for Wednesday’s clash with Scotland. Returning to the same stadium should help the Swiss as they continue to settle into this tournament and they know three points in midweek assures them of a spot in the next round.
As for Scotland, they were torn apart in the opening game of the tournament with a 5-1 loss to Germany. While they were never expected to compete with the Germans, that hit to their goal difference leaves them with a mountain to climb heading into a must-win game.
Ndoye to expose Scotland’s flaws
Heading into the tournament, much of the focus around Switzerland was around their returning older stars. However, their win over Hungary was powered by emerging talents. Kwadwo Duah scored the opener, but Dan Ndoye was incredibly exciting in a supporting role.
When you look back at the Scotland game, it was the attacking midfield players that swamped the Scottish defence. Not just goalscorers Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, but Leroy Sane got a lot of opportunities after coming off the bench. Ndoye showed a lot more attacking intent than he did in Serie A this term and he can get into those positions this week.
The Bologna midfielder struck against Napoli to wrap up an impressive season and he had three shots to no avail against Hungary. More chances should fall to him in Cologne and he is really well-priced to expose a Scottish defence which is injury-hit and struggling for depth.
Swiss look too strong
Steve Clarke and his players have said a lot of the right things in the aftermath of their defeat but that loss looks hard to bounce back from. The distinct lack of quality was clear before Ryan Porteous saw red and this Swiss side will give them a real test.
Switzerland were forcing the issue early on and they really disrupted a Hungary side that like to get on the ball and cause chaos. While the Scottish will see this as a more winnable game than their opener, their approach will likely be to try and sit deep and allow the Swiss to take the initiative.
Given how exciting the Swiss front three were – alongside their wing-backs and substitute striker Breel Embolo – Scotland could suffer early on once more. Switzerland are on a high in the aftermath of their opening win and they are great value to punish a Scotland side that has only beaten Gibraltar across their last 10 internationals.
