Sevilla and Inter set for fascinating encounter in Cologne
On Friday evening, Europa League specialists Sevilla meet Serie A behemoths Inter Milan in the final of the 2019/20 Europa League, where both clubs will be hoping to smell victory in Cologne.
Sevilla – winners of the Europa League in three of the tournament’s last six iterations – have pedigree to burn in this competition, and Los Nervionenses stretched every inch of their streetwise tactical and technical acumen to reach the final for the 6th time since 2006 this year.
With manager Julen Lopetegui a nervous observer from the touchline, Sevilla needed an inspirational performance from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to squeeze past Manchester United in the semi-finals with a 2-1 victory.
Sevilla allowed United to rack up an eye-watering 20 attempts on their goal compared to the nine they mustered themselves at the other end, and ex-Spanish national team coach Lopetegui will be fully aware that his team will almost certainly be punished in the final if they are similarly porous at the back.
Inter blow Shakhtar away
In what had been billed as a close encounter, Inter Milan made a mockery of the pre-match predictions against Shakhtar in their semi-final bout, blowing the Ukrainian champions away with a display of ruthless finishing.
The star-studded Italian outfit smashed home five goals without reply against The Miners, with prolific Belgian centre-forward Romelu Lukaku adding gloss to the score with two late efforts.
Lukaku’s brace also allowed him to maintain his phenomenal goalscoring streak in the Europa League. The 27-year-old has now found the net for 10 straight games in the competition – setting a new all-time record in the process.
Inter, who were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage last year, look like making the most of their continental reprieve in Europa’s secondary club competition, and their performance against Shakhtar suggests they are ready to land silverware in Antonio Conte’s maiden season with the club.
Inter have the firepower to succeed
While Sevilla’s defensive record has been seriously impressive in the final months of the season, they number of clear goal-scoring opportunities they conceded against Manchester United in the semi-final is difficult to dismiss.
Yassine Bounou shone between the sticks for Sevilla, making seven saves in total to keep United at bay, though some lose finishing from the Premier League giants also contributed to their lack of end product.
Inter on the other hand, needed just 12 attempts to score five times against Shakhtar in their semi-final, and in Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez – scorers of two goals each against Donetsk – the Nerrazurri have strikers clinical enough to bury the chances created for them.
Conte’s men scored two or more goals in 14 of their last 16 competitive fixtures, and buoyed by their emphatic semi-final victory, Inter have the final third confidence and quality to be just as ruthless against Sevilla.
With those factors considered, the over 1.5 Inter team goals market looks excellent value at the prices quoted, while our correct score prediction backs Inter to lift the trophy with a 2-1 win.
Inter scored exactly two goals in five of their last six matches, and another brace should be enough to see off modest goalscorers Sevilla, who notches an average of just 1.3 goals across their last 13 games.
Lukaku worth backing to continue his streak
Red-hot Romelu Lukaku can rewrite the records again in the Europa League Final by plundering in his 11th straight appearance in the competition against Sevilla.
The explosive finisher – who has already bagged a hugely impressive 33 goals in his debut campaign for Inter – had his already peaking confidence galvanised further with his double-strike against Shakhtar in the semi-finals, and the 27-year-old has the skill-set to pounce on any opportunities that open up at the RheinEnergieStadion.
