Blues set for another thriller?
Chelsea put on a show on Thursday night, winning 4-3 against Manchester United in yet another chaotic clash for the Blues. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were incredibly exciting for the opening 30 minutes, before throwing away a 2-0 lead in the lead-up to half-time. Their comeback in added time to win 4-3 papered over some cracks, with familiar issues hurting the Blues.
Pochettino started the season with a solid side which struggled to break down opponents and finish chances. Injuries have ravaged their defence and the squad’s lack of experience is showing, but somehow things seem to have clicked at the other end of the pitch. Cole Palmer is enjoying a breakout campaign, while the Blues maligned wingers are starting to contribute.
That’s led Chelsea to a string of high scoring games, a run which is set to continue.
Blades could be perfect foil for Chelsea
While Chelsea are on a high-scoring stretch, Sheffield United have played their part in a string of high-scoring games. The league’s bottom side have the worst defensive record in the division, conceding 80 times in their 30 matches this term. They’ve let in 14 goals in their last four games alone, while their last five at home have brought two 5-0 defeats, a 6-0 thumping by Arsenal, a 5-2 loss to Brighton and a 3-3 draw with Fulham.
With Chelsea continuing to have defensive issues and an in-form attack, this should be an open game. The Blues have conceded at least twice in their last six games, including a 2-2 draw at home to struggling Burnley. Their last away clean sheet came back in early October, so the hosts should be confident going forward.
Wilder’s side have no answer for Palmer
Chris Wilder has made Sheffield United more competitive since returning to the club, but they still prop up the table. The Blades have more of a cutting edge, but their defensive concerns remain. They’ve now conceded 45 times in 15 at home in the league, with 19 of those coming in their last five outings.
The Blades come into this contest having seen over 3.5 goals land in 11 of their last 12 following a 3-1 loss at Anfield on Thursday. The Blues have now seen four or more goals in 10 of their last 12 starts, so expect this to be another high-scoring clash.
The Blues should once again be dragged over the line by Cole Palmer, who has now scored in four successive games. The Man City graduate scored when these two met earlier this term and given his excellent form it’s hard to see how the Blades shut him down.
