Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Fewer than three goals have been scored in three of Slovenia’s last four matches and also in six of Slovakia’s last nine games. The first leg was 0-0 with neither side creating many good scoring opportunities, which has been par for the course when these two nations have met. Three of their past five clashes have not seen a second goal.

Slovenia 1-0

Reason for tip

Slovenia may just be able to get their noses in front in the tie thanks to Benjamin Sesko’s predatory instincts.  They have kept clean sheets in two of their lats four matches and can nick this 1-0,

Oppose goals in Ljubljana

Slovenia will hope home advantage helps them secure their spot in League B of the Nations League against Slovakia in the second leg of their playoff in Ljubljana on Sunday. Although the two nations don’t share a border, there has been little to separate them in footballing terms for the past decade.

And clashes between the two rarely prove decisive either with one win for each and three draws in their five meetings since 2016. One common theme from those games is the lack of goals with only one of the five producing more than two goals and three of them featuring fewer than two.

The evidence of the first leg in Bratislava suggests opportunities to score will be at a premium on Sunday too. Slovakia created the only ‘big’ chance of the game and Jan Oblak was on hand to pull off a superb save.

Sesko is a Slovenian matchwinner

Neither team registered more than eight total shots or an expected goals (xG) figure greater than 0.8 so it would take a brave bettor to be looking at over 2.5 goals in this rematch. The odds reflect the distinct lack of cutting edge either side showed, but Slovenia have a potential matchwinner in Benjamin Sesko.

The RB Leipzig striker has been a threat at international level for a couple of years now and boasts an impressive tally of 16 goals from 40 games. No Slovakia player comes close to his goal ratio, which is why they may struggle to secure promotion from League C in another tight affair.
